my favourite things/ a swing hung from the rafters

I have a memory
and because it has pressed
so dear to my heart
I built a swing for my kids
years ago

it hung from the basement
rafters...
the swing
the memories

Peter and Wendy
Randy and me
playing for hours
pushing each other
twisting
unwinding dizzy and giddy
with childish glee
a bare basement
except for the swing
and all the friendship
a child ever needs

so I wanted a swing
for my kids
and when some would practice piano
the others would swing
in rhythm
or out
but the swing
was still the same

all I have of that family
from way back
before my mom died
and people walk away
and distance separates
is a swing
and all the memories
that sway back and forth
filling my heart
with all the childish glee
and friendship
a child ever needs

one day from heaven's rafters
I will swing with
all of heaven's joy
and all my friends
will be there
and the laughter
will be shared

a swing
hung from
the basement
rafters

my favourite things/ Siyanda

Your time on earth is through,
and now I say to you,
Fly little angel, fly!
Use those wings that you've been given
Fly on up to God's perfect heaven.
Fly little angel, fly!
The pain you felt is now all done,
and you've gone to meet the Son.
Fly little angel, fly!
Oh, darling life, how you did shine!
You'll forever be in this heart of mine!
Fly little angel, fly!

Sometimes we just can't stop the flow
these tears that fall
and understanding
just doesn't come

flow sweet flow of tears
for each tear's kept
by the One who understands

one day He will reveal all

but for now
weep sweet ones
until you can weep no more

then
remember her beauty
your dreams for her

they are all complete
in Him now
she smiles with Him

and awaits
your journey

until then
live dear ones
and the hugs you would have given her

fit them well around another
love deep
dear ones
always there is someone

to build your dreams upon
always
another

until that day when we shall see Him
face to face
and all shall be
complete

blessings little one
the gift is that you came to us at all

we will hold that moment
always

my favourite things/cast shadows God's brightness

the cold has lifted
as thick soft wetness
covers the mounds of winter hardness
meters packed high
melted down three times
and now this fresh falling
is perfect for tongue catching
as it drifts effortlessly
playfully
clad in ballet slippers
and tutus
each flake a dance
to God's nightsong of
quiet rest and peace over the farm

Cory
from two farms over
fields large and cattle many
phoned to say a large lone wolf
tried to gain a calf
now all such young put away safe
the large lone wolf gone away empty
I should watch my herds of wandering goats he said
all resting now in the fold
Blue and Sam dogs guarding
them fenced high
angels watching

I went out with warm water for
five horses
twenty seven goats
one duck
seven chickens
one rabbit
two dogs
all pleased with the -17C
frost melted on inside windowsills
warm wetness welcome
Christmas and Easter Cacti
ready now to throw open their bloom

outside
my face uplifted to catch the
wet flakes
cool on my flushed face

I scratched each horse
let them lick my bare hands
shared words of friendship
and how much I love them
prayed they would keep safe from hungry wolves
who must also eat

snow falling
horse Rudy dozy
as he faces into the Northern sky
content
warm
white stretched soft across his back
like an appaloosa
not the son from
the line of  Man O War
that he is

then walking home praising the One who gives all this
I saw the shadows caught up in the quiet of the night
soft waves across the snowy banks
layers of soft darkness
resting upon darker layers
set against the light from the house
cast with the quiet stillness of  forest branches
their shadows quilted upon the snow
exquisite God drawing
which fades
only to my eyes
as I shut the door
and turn out the lights

cast shadows
God's brightness

my favourite things/ hoarfrost

God
His breath catches
in the air and as it passes by
it gives life

This morning
-35C
bundled like a Joey
in a Kanga's pouch
all fur lined
I venture out

I can't breathe for all the scarves
my breath caught against the coverings
I struggle free and gasp...
the freshness of the air stings pleasant
and I feel revived
I breath gentle and then deep
I like the coolness
-35 C

At the goats I call out
the dogs come first
tails high
smiles bright
Sam amazes me so
how a dog can smile

then the goats unhuddle and I laugh
the hoarfroast is feathertipped along their whole bodies
where the breath from one rested on another
twenty white feathertipped beauties
coming out into the morning brightness

stunning!

God formed Adam
out of the earth and breathed life into him
I have molded clay and tried to breathe life into it
imagining what it must be like
to have an Abba Father's heart...
to pass life
upon the likeness
of One's Image

I have made snowmen
snow angels
and they are not even 'but dust'
I breathe and they melt
beneath me

but God breathed into his nostrils
and Adam became
a living soul

that

is a God gift

I feel the breath of God around me
I feel Him fill my lungs
with His breath

There is no life without Him
Those who argue
just try to breathe life into clay
or snow
or yourself

this breath is a God gift
each one

When it is cold we see this invisible breath
settle around us
Hoarfrost
He reminds us that He is still giving life
He has the power to take the breath away
and power to give it back again

the Life part He always holds
even when the last breath
has been taken and
this life as we know it
is no more
Yet... He holds 'us'
made in His image
redeemed by a Son
who was there when the clay was formed...He formed us
and the first breath was given... He gave it
When God said
Let us make man in our image
male and female...He made us

He was there

In the beginning was the Word
and the Word was with God
and the Word was God

And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters

And the Word became flesh
and dwelt among us

Jesus
the Breath of God
the Breathgiver

this morning the hoarfrost reminded me of His Breath
surrounding us
filling us
I could touch it
He felt so close
and though it melted
at my touch...

seeing it was just a reminder
that He is always here

Breathe on me
Oh Holy One

His Breath
caught
in the
hoarfrost

my favourite things/ golden sun -32C

We are in a valley
the winds
arrested in the trees
beyond our land
the sun golden
and warming
though the weatherman
says -32C
and our
thermometer
confirms -35 C
before the sunrise
this morning

It is my dad's birthday today
He would be 100 years old on this fine and golden day

we spent many a day like this
together through the years

my smile is big
to be so loved
my prayer for each child
as I begin this day

I wait until the sun shows her face
to go out with warm water
and to give out the sweet hay
they won't want to wander
from cuddles warmth
and chewing cuds
until the brightness warms them

This morning it was hats and scarves
wool sweaters and hoodies and over-jacket
hats all velcroed in place
ski pants and muck boots
good to -25C
I've tested them colder
and am always toasty toed

I let the dogs out
from their guarding
the goats all night

they run and scoop up snow
in their mouths
and roll in the fresh powder
then are off to their game of chase
and check the trails
How does an animal
keep warm in these elements
and smile?

just two days ago we skied together
my man and the dogs
with me
our joy full

now it is
back to the home fires
an extra log in the big furnace
snuggle kitty time

and back to drawing
study God's Word
read my friends' wonderful blogs
learn my concert songs/ alto
Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus

Hail
true Body
born of the Virgin Mary
Who truly suffered
sacrificed
on the cross for man

Whose pierced side overflowed
with water
and blood
be for us a foretaste
in the test of death

and
MacGillivray's
Here's to Song

Kings have riches widely lain
lords have land but then again
we have friends and song no wealth can buy...

I love these days that keep me in
once chores outside are complete
animals content
and all seems well
though the mercury says
... it's cold!

so we play
the animals and I do

then it is in for a warm reprieve

until afternoon
before the warm sun goes down
and we do it all again

my favourite things/new beginnings

Danielle
her beauty shines
from within

it always did

a young girl
with enough life and joy
to keep one smiling
long after she's flitted
off to dance
or play

a young wife
a young mom
the beauty
ever  present
and when her  world
would seem to fall
away...

His beauty holds her up
The One who always did
and always will...
still...holds her up

He remains the same
and in His love
He promises He will be there

so the beauty remains
and always
will

and I marvel
and weep

for
all
this
beauty

Here is a part of her story... be blessed
We also ask your prayers

Bigger than me!

The day before we were to receive the results of the biopsy, my Dad, heavy-hearted, drove to work, to share Christ's love with the men locked away in the Kamloops Correctional Centre. About 18 men filled the chapel that day. And Dad says, "they sang their guts out!".
After a time of singing, they usually take time for prayer requests. Dad, stood in front of these men, their lives full of hurt. Dad's life was hurting too. He began by asking them if they might pray for him that day, and pray for me.
A man stood up... and Dad's heart sank. This was not the sort of man Dad would've chosen to bring the name of his little girl before the Throne of God. He was hard and scarred and mean.
They all bowed their heads and waited to hear what this man could possibly have to say.
"Dear God, I know I don't talk to you very often...", he began. And then, Dad said, he could not believe the prayer that proceeded to come out of his mouth! This man who could be described a lot like this: "despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not", this man, began to plead with God... for me!
As he cried out to God to remove this disease from my body, my Dad looked up to see tears streaming down his tattooed face. He glanced around the room to the other inmates, rough, wounded men, weeping with heads bowed... for my Dad... for me!
The man sat down, and Dad, looking into the faces of each one there, told them, "the world out there thinks you guys are nothing, worthless, the scum of the earth, but you have shown me today that you have hearts of compassion and love!"
A prisoner came up to my Dad, following chapel, put his hand on Dad's shoulder and said, "He's gonna heal her, Rev. Cause we need a miracle in here."

... This is so much bigger than me!

What a miracle it would be that, through my Dad, my life, MY life, my LIFE could somehow touch a prisoner's soul and let him know that he is LOVED, that he is FORGIVEN, that he is WORTHY OF LOVE regardless of what he has done... and maybe that knowledge could actually set him FREE!

my favourite things/ Sarah

the footprints
in the snow
were
her very own
I'd know them anywhere

toed in
stepping so rhythmically
making a steadfast path
with purpose
I could tell she had thrown abandon
out the chicken coop
and had been merrily
on her way

I know my girl

I followed her steps
to the hill and then called to her

her path...
vanished
her...
vanished
my heart...
pumping

how does a muscovy duck
squeeze so tightly into one's heart?

Sarah was our duckling to look after
at a friend's farm

it was
3 muscovies
and 4 rouens
in total

they started as eggs
we watched them hatch
they saw us
and called us mom
we fed
and watered them
loved them
and they just naturally
came home with us
when
our friend's farm
folded

they needed a mom
and were only a year old
or was it two
when they arrived with 5 horses
and some goats
when my home schooled kids
became their proud owners
and mom the stable hand
watching kids
and animals grow
in favour and stature
with God and man

'my' Sarah now

because the home schooled ones
have flown the coop
left the nest
followed God's heart
and what's left is just us...
horses and goats
rabbits and chickens
ducks
dogs
cat

turtle
cockatiel
my husband

we have passed every day together
Sarah and I
for 18 years
minus a few days or hours
for holidays

so when I thought she was tucked away last night with the others
certain she would be there
though I didn't see her white brightness peeking through
the mottling of the rouens or hens deep under the feeder
tucked away warm in the sweet hay
though I checked out back in their fenced day area
for her just in case
and didn't see her...
and thought surely she was snuggled deep
and safe
like every other night
for all those many many years

I should have known that our chinook weather
had given her Spring fever
where for 18 years
she would be
the risk taker
would leave the coop
search out a nesting ground
play in the creek on the way
do some skinny dipping
do some feather preening until she sparkled
do some bottom munching...

she saw the fox before it saw her
( I know because I saw his tracks that stopped before they reached the turn in the creek where she sat hiding)

the fox had returned the way he had come emptyhanded
she had stayed all night

feathers groomed
belly filled
safe in the bend of the creek
though the moon came out full
she sat in a little nook
in the cool of the stream
watching
waiting

I had searched everywhere
I had sung her name out over the hillsides
checked all the trees

She had flown to the neighbour's farm and back once
years ago
in her youth
before she believed that there was
no place like home

I checked all the hay stacks
all the mangers
under every feeder
every stall
beside every farm animal
she was our beloved prodigal
who loved to visit everyone
but would
always come back...

she always came back
always remembered where home was

she had no chains
but had lived free all these years

I called the dogs
and said find Sarah
I opened the gate to the creek area
their noses led them to her trail
that disappeared
in flight

she loved to fly

the dogs flew through the snow
past the bend in the creek to the fox trail
I watched from behind

and then I saw her

tucked cozy under the banks edge
she was a smart one
safe from the fox

she didn't move when I called her name
I called her one last time

she was so still
so perfect

I saw where she had landed
after her flight
where she had made a new path
with the same toed in
rhythmic determined steps
her path was beautiful
that beauty locked in my memory

I could see how she stopped at the creek's edge
jumped off the snow bank and glided as she touched the water
her heart merry

I saw her and knew that her bit of glory
had taken flight

her eyes were still open
still so much light
her neck set so gracefully along her back
wings folded safe around her
she looked like she had sat calm
restive unafraid

I'm afraid I cried long and hard
I held her against my breast and pulled my hoody over her wet frame to warm her
to bring back that bit of glory

the dogs came to my side
and stayed with me
they had no words
no tail wag
just presence
faithul eyes watching
waiting

have you ever done CPR to a muscovy?
her little lungs filled so easily
I tried so hard
so gently
such a crazy mom
and then I just had to let her go
and let God

goodbyes are never easy
for me at least

I feel I should have been there for her in her darkest hour
only a bird
but even God sees every sparrow that falls
I felt responsible

she was old
she was so peaceful
she was so beloved
I'll miss her
God knows all this
He holds us all
in His bosom
room for all
room for the little baby girl at TLC
fighting for her life
us fighting to keep her breath here
God holding us and saying
it is well
it is finished
death is swallowed up in Victory
death won't hurt anymore
His beloved Son finished the task
and tells us there is room for us all
in His Father's House
He gives breath and takes it away
and has power
to give it back again

Bethany said
Mom
It was her time
she lived long and well
she was a good bird

just a wee duck
beloved all the same
Lord thank you for
Sarah
